This is a fantastic opportunity for a Junior Systems Administrator to join a busy team in a role that will see you supporting our internal systems and staff. The role will allow you to get a great grounding in network and desktop support and will enable you to use and develop skills in a supportive environment. We are looking for someone who has a keen interest in computers and IT, it is passionate and serious about developing their career in network and desktop system support. We would welcome applicants who at the beginning of their career and seeking an apprenticeship or similar training scheme.

About the role:

We have a small system admin team that supports around 120 staff based in our Oxford-based offices or remotely. The junior systems administrator role encompasses support which involves dealing with requests submitted by our staff and carrying out maintenance functions on our internal systems which are a mixture of those hosted on-site and within Microsoft Azure. Issues range from application functionality issues, investigating bugs or performing investigations so staff can focus on their roles. You can expect to always be busy and technically challenged – no two days are the same!

Typical activities for the role include:

  • Monitor backups and prepare tapes to be taken offsite
  • Set up new staff profiles
  • Set up new computers/servers, upgrades and warranty
  • Maintaining meeting room equipment in good working order
  • Assist staff with their support queries, managed via Jira.
  • Patching of servers
  • Periodic testing of backup and recovery processes
  • Deployment and Migration of Websites to Internal and External Hosting Servers
  • Creating and maintaining system documentation
  • Investigate system issues (e.g., if there is a server failure within OCC or our hosting facilities); the expected level of support will build up with experience in the role.

Essential requirements:

  • A keen eye for quality and inclination to provide support. A large part of the role is providing guidance to our staff on how to use our systems so the successful candidate should be eager to support them.
  • Technical troubleshooting skills. Problems usually require further investigation and troubleshooting to understand the cause so the solution can be provided. The successful candidate will need to be comfortable with troubleshooting technical issues.
  • Good time management. The successful candidate will need the ability to juggle different tasks for different people.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills. The successful candidate will be working directly with clients, other support team members and developers.
  • Ability to review and write technical documentation. The successful candidate will need to be able to review and write technical documentation and communicate effectively.
  • Have a desire to learn. We work with a wide variety of technologies which you will need to become familiar with.

Desirable experience and skills:

  • Experience in any of the following:
    • Exchange, SharePoint, Office365 and SQL Server (including High Availability)
    • Active Directory, DHCP, DNS, WSUS, IIS, Remote Desktop Services
    • System Center VMM and Windows Hyper-V clusters
    • System Center Data Protection Manager and Configuration Manager
    • Apache HTTP, Jira, WordPress, OpenDJ, MySQL, SVN and GIT
    • Windows, Windows Server and Linux Ubuntu and SUSE
    • Cloud hosting with Azure
    • Knowledge of network topology, firewalls and security (VLANs, Routing, IEEE 802.1X etc.)
