e-Government Awards Finalist
OCC authored website a finalist in the e-Government National Awards 2009
Over the last 3 years, OCC have been working for Serco developing the Excellence Gateway website, the leading online service for everyone who works in the post-16 learning and skills sector in England. The site is sponsored by the Learning and Skills Improvement Service (LSIS), a sector-owned body that aims to accelerate the drive for excellence in this sector.
The Excellence Gateway has grown into a substantial resource, with over 70,000 taxonomically annotated documents, over 25,000 registered users, and many services targeting specific areas.
A recent such service has been the Skills for Life Curriculum resource, an online interactive tool that promotes flexible and creative use of the curriculum content in a variety of learning contexts, including embedded learning. This resource has now been shortlisted as a finalist in the e-Government National Awards 2009, in the Learning and Skills section.
The site provides its users with an on-line portfolio which enables them to collect and annotate relevant learning materials. It also provides a means for users to help each other by exchanging best practice information, appropriately contextualised to relevant parts of the curriculum.
Serco designed the site to be a highly interactive and responsive resource, and to realise this objective we developed the solution using the JQuery AJAX library running on top of our existing ASP.Net based content management system. The site also uses an innovative navigation mechanism which provides users not just with a clear picture of where they are, and also where they have been within the structure of the curriculum.
