OCC develops web site for immunological research antibodies online database
OCC has been providing software consultancy, database and web development to AbD (Antibodies Direct) Serotec since 1999. AbD Serotec is the research antibody division of MorphoSys, one of the world's leading antibody technology companies. They initially contacted OCC when their web site requirements were too great for their existing supplier. OCC supported AbD Serotec's existing processes and then facilitated the subsequent growth of both the web site and back office systems.
New web site with synchronization of databases
In 2007, OCC were contracted to undertake the implementation of a new website, after the merger of Antibodies by Design, Biogenesis, Serotec, and Oxford Biotechnology into AbD Serotec, a new division of MorphoSys.
This involved the combination of different overlapping databases and the implementation of a new web design to create the current SQL Server databases synchronised between the AbD Serotec labs and the Oxford web servers.
Navigation enhanced
OCC are now developing fast search and filter mechanisms as well as a number of smaller features to make data navigation and management easier.
Newsletter management
OCC also provided software to manage thousands of subscribers to AbD Serotec's regular e-mail newsletters.
New web site as marketing tool
This site is a critical marketing tool enabling customers to manage the 10,000 products on offer and highlighting the hundreds of new products becoming available each month.
AbD Serotec's Business Development Manager, describes the benefits of implementing the new online database: "I think this is an excellent example of effective exploitation of IT in terms of improved service delivery. Our new technology speeds and enhances the service we can offer our customers and saves staff time, representing a great return on investment."
The technologies - the solution
Selecting the best technology was no easy task, especially given the complexity and frequent updates to the antibody catalogue. The key aim was to provide distributors and customers with accurate data at the touch of a button. Dr Reynold Greenlaw, Senior Consultant at OCC says, "Our original solution, some years ago, used ASP to integrate AbD Serotec's existing website with their head office's MS Access 2000 databases, thus preserving the public web pages. AbD Serotec and OCC then started to build new search facilities and interactive web pages covering AbD Serotec's entire range of products using emerging web technologies."
Data management of Immunological Research Antibodies Database
Serotec's Business Development Manager explains, "Nine years ago, in order to manage our enormous bank of data more efficiently, we contacted Oxford Computer Consultants (OCC) to analyse our existing IT infrastructure. At the time, we were looking for a new IT partner to help us rationalise the large data sets we provide our customers."
